Once upon a time I was RSderek on UKTS 2007-2012ish. For years I shared info and helped people on forums regarding RS and RWs, wrote blog posts, took on feedback and explained A, B and C and generally was nice and helpful... :)

To free myself from the weight of the name, I created a second account so I could discuss general subjects without the prejudiced.
However, a second (or third!) account was not allowed (I did not know or care to be honest) so it was closed fair play they said naughty boy and we all moved on. As if it really mattered. :)

Proctor and Billiam were my 2 UKTS aliases while I was RSderek too (they both seemed like very nice people! and I never bothered anywhere else seemed to much like hard work)

A number of years ago I closed the RSderek account too, after the night of 'the long knives' it was time to focus on WVR and get that bad boy finished.

So to repeat... TS20xx will be developed for a while yet across UK/US and Europe. (We will also be working on TSW and a number of other Sims)



Future of TS20xx?

TSW is coming soon... :)

However, I have read a few posts saying we will stop TS20xx production...
Not true at all.

I have said a few times DTG will be producing 1st party content for a few years yet.
Just planning the next 18 months right now. (locos and routes)

Thank you Otto for the times

I read today that Otto a very active member of the train sim community had died.
One thing is so very different from other companies and games.
We at DTG ( and RSDL before it) are so very close to many of the life long simmers.

My thoughts are with his family and friends.

No one lasts forever.

Art Director

I have been quiet for a few months, but I am pleased and proud to announce that as of today I have been promoted to Art Director for Dovetail Games.
Very excited about the future and the new challenges ahead.

dev tools

Read this out there on a forum:

'DTG and their tech staff who blog always deny their content is produced with anything other than the consumer tool-set, but sometimes you have to wonder...'

you do indeed have the same tools (and I have answered it before many times) and there is no need to wonder.
However, we have been working with the tool set for almost a decade every working day so we are rather good at it.

It's not tees nor wear...

But I have started my shunter work again.

Class01 up first.

As I made the 02, 03, most of the 04, back before Zane was big I remodeled his 04 for him and the cab for that was based off my 03, so I will class that as done, I have no desire to really make it again... unless I have to!

The class 05 and 06 is missing but the rest are done.
The 07 I made was given to Skyhook and they made the cab and made it work, and well the 08 I have made many up to the 13.
The 14 is out and well beyond that there be dragons.

So, back to the 01.

I started it years ago, but never had the chance to finish it. I don't know where I am going to run it yet but I have some ideas, more on that later.

So, here is me at the coal face once again.

How long is a piece of string?

For UK TRainSim thread that discusses 'How long does it take to make a route.'
I have said this a few times, but here it is again.
We often gather suitable assets from other routes but make many new assets per route, see below)

It roughly takes about 20 to 30 man months, working 5 days a week 48 weeks a year to make a route in RWs/Train Sim. ( This time taken comes down the more you add to the team.)
There is no normal team size, but for many years a team would consist of between 7 and 10 people all working together, some spend more on the project than others.

1 team leader
2 world content builders
2 artists (creating stations and assets)
1 track layer/signal person
1 scripter
2 artists working on rolling stock.
1 Audio person.

For a 50 - 60 mile route, (the amount of new rolling stock changes the number significantly)


0 to 1 man month, however this is on going through project.

Route Set up:
0.5 Man month (weather/sky/terrain/markers etc)

Track laying:
1 man month

1 man month

1 man month

Content laying:
6 man months

Station modelling (For example -10 stations, - 2 large, 4 medium 4 small)(large station, Darlington Bank Top, Medium Station: Darlington North Road, Small Station: Shildon)
4 man months (depending on number of stations)

Main Buildings:
2 Man months

New foliage
1 Man month

New Clutter and misc assets
1 Man month


0.5 Man months

Scenarios, weather, scripting, scenario documents:

LOD pass/Lighting pass and Audio pass

0.5 Man months

0.5 Man month

Rolling Stock:

3 man month per train

2 Man month

There is loads more to take into account, reviews, meetings, bug fixes, new information coming to light, feedback etc,  but it gives you an idea.

What's a man to do?

So, now that my route is done, well done as in I ran out of time and moved onto other work and paintings. I wonder what to do with the blog, do I keep it going, do I turn it into something else or do I just let it gather dust...

Hmmmm, I really am not sure.

anyone with thoughts or advice I'd be happy to hear it.

been distracted

Sorry I have not updated any of my blogs for a month or 2, I have been distracted with my daughter who has been ill.
